I didn’t learn a lot about blood products in pharmacy school. The probable reason is that most surgeons know what they want and why they want it. However, I’ve found in practice I get questions about blood products all the time: how fast should I run this, can I mix hetastarch and this drug, what lab values are affected by cryoprecipitate, how do I raise fibrinogen, etc.
So far, I’ve only needed on reference to answer most of the questions. The following article is called, “Blood Products Are True Life-Savers: A Case Study” and gives some administration instructions for nurses and it also gives the basic lab values that are effected by Packed Red Blood Cells, Platelets, Fresh Frozen Plasma, Cryoprecipate, Granulocytes and Albumin.
If you know of another great resource, please comment!
